PLOTS

Creating co-ordinates for collective futures.

PLOTS creates an active site of communal mapping, exploration and gathering. It acts as part of the research programme for Mapping Green Dublin. Combining the tools of geographical field work and mapping with artistic walking and drawing methodologies participants collectively and playfully create a deep mapping of Dublin’s South West Inner City.

Located at her art studio The Lodge, Common Ground on the corner of Goldenbridge Cemetery, Inchicore from February 2020 to May 2020 artist Seoidin O’Sullivan alongside geographer Alma Clavin will be activating a number of themed walks, talks and communal mapping exercises building an Atlas for PLOTS.

PLOTS will creatively develop maps, plans and plot towards building future connected and critical ecologies of people, place and planet. During this time of climate crisis we need to plot new imaginaries and co-ordinates for just and ecological ways of being in our cities.

PLOTS project themes are: Critical Mapping Practices; Critical and Feminist Spatial Practice; Greening the City; Climate Justice; Emotional Mapping; Community Gardens; Ecologies; Biodiversity; The Commons.

Due to Covid 19 we have reconfigured the next phase of our work. PLOTS is a project created by artist Seoidín O'Sullivan that invites you with Mapping Green Dublin to create a map of your current 2km run, walk or cycle route.

Your PLOTS Map will form an integral part of our Dublin 8 community atlas, building a picture of our valuable public green infrastructure across Dublin’s south west inner city. Let’s work together to make our city bike and pedestrian friendly and give everyone fair access to green space.

You can create your map in two ways:

1. My Map app on your phone and share.

2.Draw and then photograph your map and share.

Plot ways your neighbourhood could be improved.

Plot interesting things you see, feel, hear or smell

Plot new things you have discovered

Plot changes you may have noticed eg traffic, pollution and noise

Your map will be shared as part of Mapping Green Dublin research to create a greening strategy for Dublin 8. All maps are anonymised and data will not be shared and is only used for this project. see: https://mappinggreendublin.com/art-project/

MAPPING GREEN DUBLIN We are map makers, geographers, artists, activists and residents of Dublin.

Mapping Green Dublin is an action research project led by UCD’s School of Geography in collaboration with arts organisation Common Ground, artist Seoidín O’Sullivan and event facilitators Connect the Dots. It will take place across Dublin 8 from 2019 – 2020.

Mapping Green Dublin’s first task is to map the span and territories of trees and green space across Dublin 8, identifying their location and quality, identifying green space deficits and future needs.

Mapping Green Dublin‘s series of curated events from March – May 2020 will map out a proposed process for co-creating urban greening solutions focussing more on local identity and the possibilities for future creation. A co-created greening plan from the bottom-up ensures that greening interventions respond to neighbourhood needs, have high social and cultural value within the community and maximise opportunities for urban wellbeing.

Mapping Green Dublin’s research aims to identify specific areas for focused greening interventions.  An anticipated deliverable from this action research project is a process map to enable local authorities and other policymakers to engage with local communities and develop bottom-up approaches to appropriate urban greening.
